“Trilateral Joint Exercise – Dosti” conducted by the joint forces of MNDF Coast Guard, Indian Coast Guard, Sri Lankan Coast Guard has commenced. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the exercise.
Exercise Dosti is a biennial exercise which was introduced in the year 1991 by the joint forces of MNDF Coast Guard and India. Sri Lanka began taking part in the exercise starting the year 2012. Army forces of Mauritius, Seychelles, and Bangladesh act as observers of the exercise.
Guest of honor at the commencing ceremony held today at Crossroads was Minister of Defence Uza. Mariya Ahmed Didi.
Addressing the attendees, Minister of Defence in her speech mentioned the privilege of being part of such a historic moment as this year marks the 30th anniversary of the trilateral exercise “Dosti”. Minister mentioned the showcase of friendship amongst neighbor countries through such exercises and how personnel and sailors of MNDF view these joint exercises and trainings as highly benefiting. Highlighting the exercise commenced today, Minister relayed thanks to the government of both India and Sri Lanka in their contribution of strengthening capability of MNDF maritime forces.
Minister mentioned the close ties held with the neighbor countries by President of Maldives and Commander in Chief, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, and noted that these exercises pave way for a better cooperation. Minister noted that the lifetime friendship built amongst the participants are something valuable achieved apart from the skill and knowledge these exercises convey.
Chief of Defence Force Major General Abdullah Shamaal also addressed the attendees of the ceremony. Highlighting the exercise Dosti, Chief of Defence Force mentioned that these exercises portray a long journey of 30 years and that a strong maritime force has been assembled through the exercises held from 1991 up until today. Chief of Defence Force thanked everyone involved in making these exercises successful throughout the last 30 years.
Chief of Defence Force mentioned the newly found obstacles confronted by the country and regional security and the changing environment of most part of Indian Ocean Region. Chief of Defence Force Highlighted the crimes of cross border terrorism, piracy, drug trafficking, and weapon trafficking as unassessed obstacles.
Commandant of MNDF Coast Guard Colonel Mohamed Saleem, Additional Director of Indian Coast Guard General Virendra Singh Patania, and Director General of Sri Lankan Coast Guard Rear Admiral Anura Ekanayake spoke at the ceremony.
Events organized for the 30th anniversary of the Exercise will take place in Maldives throughout 20th to 24th November at the 15th serial of trilateral exercise “Dosti”.
Attendees at the ceremony included Minister of Defence Uza. Mariya Ahmed Didi, Chief of Defence Force Major General Abdullah Shamaal, Vice Chief of Defence Force Brigadier General Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef, General Officers of MNDF, Director General of Sri Lankan Coast Guard Rear Admiral Anura Ekanayake, and personnel of MNDF, Indian and Sri Lankan Coast Guard.
