PRESS RELEASE ON LIVE FIRE RICOCHET ACCIDENT NEAR K.GIRIFUSHI

                                06th November 2019

We regrettably note that a tourist passenger on board a boat traveling near our training facility at Girifushi Island sustained a non-life threatening injury this afternoon. The injury was caused by an indirect bullet that had ricocheted during a live fire exercise held at Girifushi Island. Preliminary findings reveal that the boat was traveling beyond the standard range for small arms fire within accepted safe distance and not directly in the line of fire and the bullet was a freak accidental ricochet. The tourist, a male German national aged 41 years, was immediately evacuated by military first responders and is in good condition receiving treatment at Hulhumalé, Tree Top Hospital.
The safety of both civilians and service personnel is a paramount concern in the conduct of all our training exercises. Live fire exercises are a necessary part of our training programs and we expend great effort and caution to ensure that these have zero impact on civilians traveling the area by sea. We have immediately launched an investigation into the matter and have presently suspended all exercises using live ammunition at Girifushi until the conclusion of a full and thorough investigation.
We apologize for this most unfortunate incident and give our full assurance that we will be implementing even more stringent safety measures to prevent such incidents from repeating.
